Providenciales Comprehensive Beach Management Plan

Summary: Erickson Consulting Engineers Inc. (ECE) was commissioned to develop a comprehensive beach management plan which would provide a description and inventory of the present conditions of the beaches and nearshore areas fronting the coastline from Ocean Club to the boundary of the Emerald Beach Project.

Key Project Elements:

  • Comprehensive Beach Management Plan
  • Inventory the Existing Environment: Beaches and Nearshore Bathymetry, Biotic Habitats, Land Use/Ownership, Sand Deposits, Coastal Structures and Coastal Processes
  • Recommend Project Plans and Designs (Emerald Beach, Pelican Beach and East Grace Bay)
  • Monitoring (Beach Surveying and Marine Habitat Surveys)

The plan provides a description and inventory of the present conditions of the beaches and nearshore areas in terms of the physical and biotic environment between Leeward Point at the northeast and Grace Bay at the southwest limits of the subject area. The plan studied coastal processes and causes of the sand deficits along the subject beaches. It provided an analysis of the inventory of the existing coastal structures and beach conditions and proposed solutions based upon existing and planned projects currently under government review. The plan also recommended a beach monitoring program on an annual basis to determine project performance and if interim corrective actions are warranted.

In summary, the plan describes the present erosion problems and the recommended restoration projects required to ameliorate the beach damage in a consistent, comprehensive manner that will protect property owners along each distinct shoreline segment, from Emerald Beach to Grace Bay.
